Family Traditions: My Great Grandmother's Sugar Cookie Recipe

This holiday season, I’m looking forward to baking with my family. As I was looking through recipes, I found this sugar cookie recipe from my great grandmother and just knew that I had to share it! I always looked forward to baking these cookies with my great grandmother each holiday season, and now I get to share this tradition with my boys… and now each of you. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

  1. 1 cup butter

  2. 1 1/2 cup sugar

  3. 1 egg beaten

  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla

  5. 2 1/2 cups sifted flour

  6. 1 teaspoon baking powder

  7. 1 teaspoon salt

  8. 1 teaspoon cream of tarter

  9. chill and then roll out

DIRECTIONS

  1. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

  2. Mix butter and sugar in an electric stand mixer or mixing bowl until light in color.

  3. Add egg and milk. Beat to combine.

  4. Slowly add flour, baking powder, and salt. and mix until mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl.

  5. Divide the dough in half, wrap in waxed paper, and refrigerate for 2 hours.

  6. Preheat oven to 35o degrees F.

  7. Roll out dough to 1/40inch thick on surface covered in powdered sugar.

  8. Cut into desired shapes and place at least 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet.

  9. Bake for 7-9 minutes, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time.

  10. Let cool for 2 minutes on cookie sheet before placing on a cooling wire rack.

  11. Decorate cookies as desired or serve as is.

** If dough has warmed during rolling, place cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill **

Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.
