New Year. New Organized You. Tips for Neurodivergent People (or anyone who could use a helping hand)

Most people regard the New Year as a time to recenter, set new goals and to stay organized. This is why one of the most popular resolutions for Americans in 2024 is to have better organization in their daily lives.

The thought of getting EVERYTHING organized can be overwhelming—especially if you are neurodivergent. The most common reasons people procrastinate organization are:

  • Unsure how to organize properly and feeling overwhelmed makes it hard to start

  • Need for perfection causes stalls the process

  • Improper time management halts the project

  • Inability to make decisions that lead to inaction

  • Sentimental attachments to too many items equal indecisiveness

Here are our top three tips for how to stay organized this upcoming year.

1. Start Small and Specific

  • Don't try to tackle everything at once. Choose one area to focus on first, like your desk, inbox, or a single drawer.

  • Break down large tasks. Instead of "organize the entire house," aim to "declutter the kitchen counter" or "file important documents."

2. Declutter Ruthlessly

  • The 20/20 Rule: If you can replace an item for under $20 in 20 minutes, get rid of it.

  • The "Keep, Donate, Toss" Method: Categorize items into these three piles to make decisions quickly.

  • Ask yourself: "Do I use this?" "Do I love this?" "Does this bring me joy?" If the answer is no, let it go.

3. Find a System That Works for You

  • Digital Tools: Visual planners are a great way to keep track of goals and priorities. Apps like THRIVE can help you breakdown bigger tasks by creating tasks and subtasks, each with notifications. You can also color-code tasks and add visual icons for quick recognition.

    4. Create Routines

  • Time Blocking & Check-ins: Schedule 15-30 minutes each day or week to review your schedule, tidy up a specific area, and process any incoming mail/emails. THRIVE allows you to allocate specific time slots for certain activities to improve focus and productivity.helps you plan these out alongside your regular schedule and sends you reminders.

  • "Two-Minute Rule": If a task takes less than two minutes, do it immediately.

6. Be Patient and Persistent

  • Organization is a journey, not a destination. Don't get discouraged if you slip up.

  • Celebrate small victories. Acknowledge and reward yourself for progress, no matter how small.

  • Adjust as needed. Your organizational system should evolve as your needs and priorities change.

Don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself to get everything done right away or the "right" way. Remember this is a journey. If you properly plan your organization will seem like an ant hill instead of a mountain.
